Really - it can be that easy to grow your own fruits and vegetables! Growing your own fruits and vegetables will help stretch your food dollars. Did you know that you can use your EBT card to buy vegetable and fruit seeds and plants for your garden? If you want to eat more fruits and vegetables but think they cost too much money, this can help.
- Planting 1 tomato plant costs $1.00 and can produce 10 pounds of tomatoes. Planting 1 packet of string bean seeds costs $1.25 and can produce 6 pounds of beans. Planting 1 cucumber plant costs $1.00 and can produce 10 pounds of cucumbers. Planting 1 packet of spinach cost $1.25 and can produce 5 pounds of spinach. Total spent on plants $4.50. Total saved by growing your own=$23.00. Number of servings of vegetables=about 75!
- Get your kids involved. Let them plant seeds, weed, and water. They will be excited to try the things they helped grow!
- Worried about trying to grow your garden? Don't be. Choose a sunny spot, plant the seeds, and then remember to give them enough water. They will do the rest.
- No room for a garden? Some towns have community garden sites where you can rent a garden plot. Or try container gardening.
